FAQ
Q. Can Girls join the Scouts?
A: Yes.
Girls
are free to join all sections of the Scout movement. We currently have 10 girl members in the Cub and Scout sections. And counting ... Just as many girls as boys now join Scouts.
Q: Is it expensive to join?
A: We don’t think so. We charge £10 per month which covers insurances and most of our events. Some special events do cost more but we always try to keep costs down. Weekend camps cost about £25 — it depends what we’re doing and how far we have to travel.
Q: Do you have to wear uniform?
A: The Scout Association is a uniformed organisation. Beavers and Cubs wear sweatshirts and the Scouts and Leaders shirts. Our scarves are royal blue, white and banana yellow. Most weeks trainers and tracksuit trousers do but sometimes we ask you to wear school trousers and shoes too.
Q: Can I try it out and what happens if I don’t like it?
A: We’d love you to try it out and if you enjoy it (and we know you will) then we ask you to learn your promise, learn about our history, buy a uniform and get invested. If you don’t enjoy it tell us why. We have a zero tolerance attitude to bullying.
Q: I’d like to join as a Leader but I wasn’t a Scout myself. Can you help?
A: Not all of our
Leaders
or Helpers were Scouts themselves. If you join as a Leader there is a comprehensive training program run by the County. You must be willing to have a C.R.B. check and have further references taken up by the Scout Association. Training includes compulsory First Aid and Child Protection modules. Each leader is given a training mentor to help them and assessment is done when you’re ready.
Q: Could I start straight away?
A: E-mail the section that you wish to join and one of the leadership team will e-mail or call you back. Please give us details of your/your child’s name, date of birth and a contact phone number.
We do have a waiting list and guarantee movement for members between sections.
We’ll discuss a start time with you. Depending on circumstances you could start within a week or maybe have to wait a half term or so. We’ll always do our best.
Q: Are there other Scout Groups in Carlisle?
A: Yes. There are several groups in the Reivers District. They cover Bewcastle, Brampton, Dalston, Scotby and Carlisle.
If you’d like details of other groups then e-mail the
Scout Development Office
. Our Development Officer will be able to help you. But why would you want to go anywhere else?
